6 years. Does that mean I’m not a newlywed anymore?  Guys, I’ve been to hell and back, which is unfortunate for me because heat is just as inflammatory, if not more, than ever.

It’s been eons since I wrote on here or had the willpower and/or desire to.  I lived in other homes for some time, and during part of that stint, I took care of even sicker people for a while.  Adrenaline kept me going until it didn’t, and then I ended up in a great job in natural health care, and then I quit that job cause it was killing me.

I’ve learned a lot since then, older and wiser, and crows feet and grey henna’d hair to prove it.  Gluten free, paleo, and all those progressive diets I was always getting a step ahead of before the crowd have all become POP culture. I’ve had horrible cases of fatigue and depression and some really exuberant highs from treatments that work for 2-4 weeks and then turn on me.  Adding to my roster of mysterious autoimmune symptoms (which blood work confirms is still active, alive and well), but the medical world still finds too vague to diagnosed properly), is now two bulging cervical discs and probably some low blood sugar issues.  I don’t even like the word bulge. Ew. Or Lupus.  So gross.

Since I last wrote, Obamacare happened. Big ha.  The push to kill off the middle class genetic slop that has survived in America.  So, no health care coverage here.

However, I am the happiest I have ever been.  My 3 cats keep my immune system active and fighting for something.  Husband is supporting my homemaking for the time being, supporting the end of full time work, so that I can have a healthier life. Happy wife, happy life.  I no longer stick to any form of eating system because frankly they all drive me crazy.  The zealots that emerged after me are fun to make fun of too.   I do the best that I can to eat anti-inflammatory and brace myself when I don’t.  I do not blatantly cheat or get lazy, I just don’t get all psycho if I had no gluten free starch available and bit on a GMO bagel.  Screw the acidity factor, I’m addicted to coffee.  I needed the vice.  I balance it with nopal which I still drink.  With the support of so many loved ones, we managed to cram us into a humble little home, I hope to find a modest and stress free part time job, and I try to nurture relationships which is the essence of life.

In the chiropractor’s office where I worked, I saw too many women my age diagnosed with some form of autoimmune.  Unfortunate as it was, I realized I am not alone and that everyone is trying the best that they can.  One lady with lupus and sjogren’s syndrome (which I found myself wishing I had it so I can have the damn diagnosis and be done with it), she willingly gave up coffee for 6 months, to get blood work done, to prove it didn’t impact her health one way or another, so she can keep her precious vice.  I cannot tell you how much validation this gave me.  Not only in that it’s hard to give up some parts of you, but in that the fight is not just in our heads. It’s for real, meng.

Now when we go out in crowd’s and friends ask where we want to eat, I don’t feel the heat of the spotlight.  Before I have to raise my mousy voice about gluten and nightshades…someone else is proudly defending their right to also pick a restaurant cause they want to know the farm where their cow came from and how grain free their sauce really is.  All us cripples are slowly being empowered.  What a sad thing, no? That everyone has to be careful about what they eat now.  But what a wonderful thing, that people finally care!

I still must take many supplements.  Some are religious, and some are until I grow intolerant and find the next panacea.

Omega EFA – For what I can afford, this is the best deal. And I wait for the Buy 1 get 50%.  I share the other with Husband or I’d just be selfish now wouldn’t I?  We don’t need any more Omega 6 than Merica provides, so this one focuses on what we lack. It’s sourced from small fish so I like this one. The bigger fish can tend to be more cancer causing, as well as Omegas should be taken with vitamins called co-factors such as Vitamin E and other antioxidants to absorb the product properly and prevent that cancer causing step.  I take my co-factors in other supplements or foods.  Where this fish comes from, I don’t know.  You can probably ask Vitacost if you must know (and some must). It’s pricey to buy fish from which you know where it was born. Each must chose what they can do.  It does contain soy, but I avoid soy in all my other foods as much as possible and this is a product that fights inflammation, so I’d rather take this than not at all.  Everyone in the world needs to take this, especially if you have chronic pains.  I hate spending money on it, but it must be done.  And yes, it does help.  I always forget it does, until I stop taking it.

Vitamin D3 – I honestly couldn’t begin to tell you why this is essential without pulling out my notes and binder. At some point the knowledge I haveby way of osmosis.  Because my joints will only last about 45 minutes in front of this screen, I would rather look into it again on a different occasion. But all I know is women need this, women of a certain age need it more, and it is essential for the chronics.  I have been advised my a nutrition doctor to take up to 10,000 a day during my worst spells.  This is an inexpensive form of it.  A higher quality, but hard to find is Apex Liqua D K-87.  I have never seen it online. It’s a good price for the quantity, but all I know is that you need to find a doctor that provides it.  My chiropractor has it in stock.

Cornsilk – For the water retention.  It helps keep the swelling down.  It helps my remove toxins since my body loves them so much it just wants to hold on to them and never let go.  The tea form is better way to take it in and also a great deal on vitacost, but I have so many little details to my regimens that popping the herb is much easier.

So there you have it.  I’m alive. I’m happy. The struggle is real.  The determination to stay strong and at peace is also real and currently being achieved (if I avoid that 3rd cup of joe).  If I think of any more products I can suggest for the hurting, I certainly will.  And hopefully I will have time to write again before I get another job or get stuck on Hulu.  And even more hopefully, it will be about healthy, but really delicious, foods! Oh yea.

On the next blog post, I will be sharing the incredible, no-brainer, common sense, sources with guidelines on how to heal through food.  I talk a lot about doing something, anything, to improve your diet to prevent or reverse disease, but I haven’t been specific on how to go about it.  That’s because I myself didn’t know.  I drop dairy here, substitute a grain here and there, and take a supplement when I think it’ll benefit, but here’s what I have learned…TAKE NOTE: You can’t heal your aches and pains without intent and a plan.  You can’t just say, I’m going to eat healthier or eat wheat instead of white bread and suddenly become healthy.

Teaching your body to absorb food as fuel, in this modern world so deficient of readily available nutrients, means taking in knowledge, writings lists, learning new recipes, and completely transforming -with an open mind- almost everything we thought we knew about eating.

That sounds like too much work already doesn’t? Take is from Little Miss I-Can’t-Because (INSERT EXCUSE):  It’s doable.  It’s taken years to get to the point where I’ve embraced it.  I’ve stopped resisting the right to eat a burger that’s been scrubbed through ammonia or a soda that I saw clean rust off my car’s engine with my own eyes.  It’s taken me years to drop the fact that “everything in moderation” is a good mantra, because its not true.  Some foods and habits will always be received as hostile in our bodies and mind.

The good news is, you don’t have to do it in one week, or even one month.  If you already agree a path to health is the way to go, get used to the idea.  Pick up a book, read one of the websites I will provide.  You don’t have to buy into everything you read.  Just try one or two cleansing or healing changes and your body will start appreciating it.  If you truly listen to your body, it will be second-nature to move on to the next step.  It’s actually better to make the changes slowly, because too much too fast freaks out our delicate bodies (toxin release needs time to exit the body, if not they just hang around and get absorbed right back in).

Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

I don’t know where to start on how much healthier Coconut Oil is than any other oil.  Most oils damage the cellular structure of the foods we cook, even healthy cooking, creating radical damage to the cells, increasing acidity in our bodies, throwing off our true sensor of fullness, and have harmful saturated fats.  Coconut on the other hand, contains acids that fight bacteria and viruses, has medium chain fatty acids that promote weight loss, helps regulate cholesterol and thyroid issues.  The benefits are endless, read about it with Dr. Mercola. Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo (and Conditioner)

If you’re still buying cheap shampoo with chemicals, you really oughta stop.  Your hair is important and you don’t want it to be pretty right now; You want it to be strong and healthy until the day we finally rot.  This costs the same as the lab-contents used for Pantene or Loreal, but reaps a million times the benefits.  I once raved about the Giovanni 50/50 shampoo and conditioner, but this one takes the cake.  It’s more natural than the previous one.  But what makes it shine -pun intended- is the Tea Trea Oil, which I already love to use for cleaning products.  With Lupus,  hair loss comes with the package.  Once I started using this, the problem disappeared almost instantly.  Recently I switched to another organic shampoo because I couldn’t find this one at TJMaxx and in a few weeks my hair began to wilt away again.  My scalp dried up, became itchy, and had tiny pimplish lesions.  I was freaking out wondering where I went wrong! To test my theory about the shampoo, I grabbed my pure TTO bottle and lathered up a few drops with the expensive shampoo I’d replaced it with.  Immediately you can feel the blood rush and mintiness go to the follicles and the cool relief on the little bumps.  Hair is shiny and bouncy again.  It’s all about circulation! New Wave Enviro Premium Shower Filter

Speaking of luscious hair, if your water at home or apt sucks or you’re too average to have an in-home-all-over filtering system, this is the thing to splurge on.  It’s not much, it’s lasts about six months, though I swear there is so much chlorine where I live that we replace it about every 3 months.  Also, his showers are longer than Mariah Carey’s.  This really makes a big difference is suppleness and shine.  All those chemicals seep into your head and brain.  I even used to get headaches after showering since I’m sensitive to chemicals.  The refill is $21 after the first buy.  At Whole Foods, this filter costs $50 I believe; the replacement: $30.

Stevia (natural calorie free sugar subsitute)

With fiber of all things.  I got this one pounder because I needed a sweetener, and it didn’t hurt to have some extra fiber.  If you haven’t learned about the horrors of sugar yet, please do horrify yourself : Why everyone needs to understand sugar hangover; The Emotional and Physical Effects.  Not to mention why your kid won’t stop doing floor pinwheels.  If you think you’re doing good by taking Truvia or Stevia in the Raw, check your ingredients again! They contain Erithyrol or something else ending in “enol” which they will convince you its natural and safe.  Well, thanks to there being no law defining what natural is…plutonium is also natural..you get scammed.  It’s something that when fermented turns into formaldehyde.  Could it be that bad?  I was once doing vegan and natural, hardcore, but nothing would explain why every time I had my tea or anything else with Truvia, my brain would tremble and get inflamed.  Wanna play with your brain like that?  I know it seems drastic, but if you already have chronic fatigue, an autoimmune disease, cancer and diabetes in your family history..start playing around with the idea of a natural sweetener.  This one takes some getting used to, but we all bought into Splenda for a while, didn’t we?  You won’t feel the hint of bitter soon.  It’s also super concentrated so you only have to use a pinch and it goes a long way. Flirt around with this and then we’ll talk about how we should be getting our sugars only from pure fruits and how yummy it is to do so once we can make time and effort to think of it from a natural standpoint.  It’s a little more expensive if you’re used to refined sugar, but its worth the money to lose a few pounds and lose the dependency from a evil little ingredient.

Plant Protein

Sorry, didn’t know how to picture this side by side with our new format on WordPress.  For years I drank dairy based protein shakes made from casein and whey when I strength trained.  If you read the China Study, you will learn how detrimental these proteins are for our potential cancer cells.  Not to mention the sugar free ones that were loaded with aspartame and all the processed hard-to-digest ingredients that make you bloated!  I’ve decided not to do protein shakes anymore, but my husband was still having this.  Slowly joining me on my health kick, he’s agreed to switch to these proteins, organic, allergy, dairy, gluten-free, and loaded with veggies and good grains.  And they taste amazing with almond milk and fruits if you don’t want to eat a whole meal.  They are incredibly delicious, available in a few other flavors. Extremely Moderate Home Makeover

This blog seems to have creeped into health topics more than actual housewifing.  My inflammation levels lately are not allowing for too many ambitious projects (to my dismay),  but there are projects in the works.

Matter of fact, before Husband is off again to save Florida, last night we made an executive decision to start fixing up our ‘fun’ room.  I insisted I build the medium bookcase from Walmart to start fixing up the spare room (which has been accumulating clutter for a year now, but lacking in the organizational items department).  It’s a plain ‘ol Mickey Mouse piece of furniture, but my collection of books and such have been sadly awaiting display from the dusty cardboard boxes they were originally moved in.  Newlyweds had to choose their next piece of furniture carefully if you need a new mattress, so we settled for a makeshift piece of wood.  We have pieces of art  musical instruments that are serving as shelves and laundry baskets that the cats have claimed possession of.

Yes, Husband actually bought me one of these! And I love it.

While he’s gone this week, my mission is to start purging any rat-pack items that are taking up space.  You know, the little pieces of junk that had sentimental value at the time you saved it, and later can’t figure out why in the name of Chelsea Clinton you thought it was special.  Pre-marital apparel that is irrelevant.  Correspondence that was too miscellaneous to file and somehow important enough to be saved.  Doo-hickeys ordered from the wedding registry that can only be explained by the drunken power of the shopping gun (pre-vow hysteria).  His valuable collection comics and action figurines.  An iron.  Ha, what is ironing?

I will do it as time and health allows, for there are many other things to keep up, such as the cooked meals from scratch I must prepare (no convenient food for this delicate flower, not even sandwiches), the boring laundry, the messy cats, the personal maintenance, the minuscule chores that add up to tidy house.  Actually,  so long as my health is on hold,  Husband made the suggestion that maybe we ought to hire a maid to help out every once in a while.  So this is love.

ON BEING OLD FASHIONED

Please understand, it is not my desire to hand over my duties to another woman.  I am Spanish and its in my blood to clean and cook for my man.  No illness can take that away from me.  But unlike many of the Spanish, I’m not prideful down to the core.  To have a clean and organized home is more important than pretending I can work full-time, deal with 24hr pain and exhaustion, maintain a sane identity, and still wear a genuine smile for when my guy comes back from toiling under the sun.  Many women are overworked, overstressed, and neglecting themselves, by having to take on multiple roles.  They manage it well and deserve praise, but they do not deserve the wear and tear that comes with it.  These are the times we live in and we must find ways to adapt.  I’d rather scrub my own  toilets and afford a new dress rather than have a Maria do it (Oh, don’t be so sensitive.  My mother was a maid for the wealthy in NY and her name is Maria), but  we’ll have to have reallocate some monies if and when this is will come into effect.  I appreciate His perceptiveness in the matter and that he offered it before it even occurred to me.  It don’t think it will be more than once or twice a month, but now I know I have the option with Husband having made it clear he understands that this one is out of my hands.

That being said, I am old-fashioned enough to believe the woman’s place is in the house or societal matters.  Power to stay-at-home moms and a certified housewives.  This is the way nature intended it.  The men go away to hunt, the woman nests, gathers, and takes care of the children/cats.  When the man comes home depleted and ready to regenerate, the woman is not cranky because she just got home from dealing with idiocy in the workplace, she is not losing her head from scrambling to make a pre-packaged dinner for the man, she is not to tired for bedroom-duty at nighttime, she has time to look nice for her man so he does not have to think of his wife as the wispy-haired, spoon-waving, sauce-covered-t-shirt, rambling madwoman that this society has made of women! (Note: I know there are women out there who handle this with grace, I don’t imply to total population of working women are at tipping point.  However, to those keeping up appearances, make sure your chi is not fried internally).

My point is that the stress levels are imbalanced because man has to help woman do chores and help with the kids’ homework when he should come home to relax after breaking his back all day.  Woman should have time to spend time raising and watching the younguns at playtime.  We should be balanced people because we are given the mental and physical capacity of carrying our family-roles adequately.

Women have a never-ending to do list and stress is at an all-time high. Men are dealing with their own levels of stress. As a result, relationships become filled with misunderstandings, friction, and a sense of helplessness.

WELLNESS GOALS

As I was mentioning above, my goal this week is to maintain myself physically while improving the state of my home, treading delicately so that I don’t overdo it.  (Another note: last weeks 30 mins of moderate cardio plus 30 mins of Classical Stretch: no bueno.  My body is not ready, my muscles did not heal well from what should be non-strenuous exercise.  This week will alternate workouts daily rather than knock out two in one day, or skip if necessary).

I have to reinforce some health tips regarding nutrition, anti-inflammatory foods, and basic bodily upkeep.  I urge my friends and readers to try a few of these if you feel or look stressed and rundown.  For those who argue that you have no inflammatory problems, I believe you, but we do live in a country with a pro-inflammatory diet.  Without noticing, our bodies could be struggling too hard on their own for balance.   Help it be ready for the next time flu season comes around. (Also, incredibly helpful for those with asthma and allergies). It’s easy to forget, if I may speak for us all, but worth the reminders:

  • Drink a gallon of water a day – Already bought my purified water.  Lugging it around everywhere.  Moves the toxins faster, clears skin, lubricates all systems, basic life force, reduces the need to imbibe other caloric drinks, constant hydration diminishes chances of headaches.
  • Reduce sugar – Every other week, no sugars other than fruit.  No sweetened drinks.  Sugar encourages diseases such as inflammation-based ones, candida, and cancer.  I’m addicted to it like cocaine (even natural sugars) which is a subject for another day.  If you’re not ready to quit, and least cut out all refined sugar.  Look out for hidden sugars in breads, microwave dinners, pre-packaged foods.  After 50 grams of sugar a day, you’ve surpassed the allotted daily nutritional recommendations and it will begin to turn into fat if you’re not moderate to heavily active.
  • Green Tea – 2 to 3 times a day.  This is an anti-inflammatory and highly beneficial drink.  Thankfully, I was forced into quitting my coffee addiction.  Dropping this tasty daily or trice-a-day comfort is not for wimps in the Starbucks splattered world.  The truest hazard of coffee are refined and processed beans (information rather recent to me) which cause even more acidity, free-radical damage, and chemical changes in the body.  Pro-inflammatory.  Nothing wrong with caffeine in moderation and Green Tea is enough to get tiny jumps in the day without the overload.
  • Ginger Tea – Another anti-inflammatory gem.   An alkaline drink for an acidic world.  This one AND green tea combined do wonders for my swollen hands and feet.  Although the swelling is not always obvious (obvious being a purplish-red, rubbery, weak and impossible to slip out wedding ring), if your hands hurt immensely when you hit or bump them softly on surfaces, you might have internal inflammation.  The first time I truly came to understand how severe my inflammation was a time I dropped my keys on my sandal-covered feet and I had to sit down, cry, and wait for pain in my leg and head to stop.  It shouldn’t hurt that much.
  • Celery Juice Every Day – I swear by this alkalinic drink.  Every time I overdo it with the dairy or sugars.  Even with the amount of acidic tea that helps calm inflammation, balancing is still required.  I have recently started to add aloe vera in the blender.  Not only good for inflammation but for digestive aid, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc.  Click here for the ton of benefits from this spiky plant.  You can buy it in liquid form if you’re afraid of touching the goo.
  • NO GLUTEN. PERIOD.  – This one for all with food sensitivities and allergies.  The belly ache and anxiety is immediate!  I have gotten careless with this one, although much better.  It goes hand in hand with the sugar goal, because almost every gluten product has some form of sweetener added.  No more cookies and Starbucks bakery, no matter how stressed I get.   Food is not love – Monica from Friends. For those who know you have an unhealthy diet and wanna get on the ball, reducing your gluten (breads, pasta, baked goods) will help your body streamline digestion.  Might be worth looking into new grains that deserve our attention.  Well, they’re not new, but not common: quinoa, amaranth, millet, etc.
  • Vitamins and Supplements – Organically, we shouldn’t need to take a multivitamin or extra supplements.   We should be getting all our nutrients and minerals from local game and agriculture.  But we eat from supermarkets where everything is shipped from all over the world, not indigenous to our area, temperature, and atmosphere.  That little pyramid of food groups, not so balanced.  Therefore we end up lacking here and there in essential nutrients.  If you don’t have a diet full of fruits and veggies, a multivitamin shall cover the basics.  The fish oil will cover some other bases.  And depending on your personal needs, there is always Echinacea, milk thistle, calcium, magnesium, etc..  It’s good to find out where our deficiencies are and help them.  I ‘m going to stick to my vitamins like never before because I tend to forget them when I’m healthier.  If you need overall health and balance, look into Green Vibrance and the Magic Pill.
